Mullein

latin name: Verbascum

Mullein is a biennial plant and a member of the Scrophulariaceae family. It grows silvery green and extremely fuzzy leaves, and growing up to eight feet in height. In the first year it appears as a stout rosette of leaves, and in the second year, it sends up huge flower spikes with many bright densely clustered yellow flowers. Mullein has traditionally been used as an expectorant (promoting the discharge of mucus) and as a demulcent (soothing irritated mucus membranes). Both qualities make it useful for soothing irritated lungs, throat and air passageways.
